天演论 were not only to “seek wealth and power” in a time of national crisis, but also to advocate for “relying on the gradual refinement of true knowledge and solid principles to benefit the world”. Comparatively, the latter was Yan Fu’s true focus. In the process of composing
Tianyan Lun
, Yan Fu navigated between “clarity of expression” and “depth of insight”. He both engaged with nature through an
imaginative subjectivity, contemplating its mysteries, and critically assessed modern Western natural philosophy from a reflective standpoint. By integrating the Chinese philosophical concept of the “Dao of perpetual life”, he sought to reconcile the inherent fractures within the modern conception of nature. The worldview he unveiled was more primordial and open than the ideological constructs of the 20th century. In this sense, the radical dichotomy between “civilization and barbarism” in modern Chinese intellectual history, along with the cultural attitudes and ideological issues it spawned, should be traced back to the broader problematics of the relationship between Heaven and humanity. Only by centering on this fundamental question can the cultural synthesis of past and present, East and West, be properly understood.
