Distinct from earlier periods, the Six Dynasties witnessed a flourishing of literary and personalized representations of the story of “Jing Ke’s assassination attempt on the Qin King”, which appeared abundantly in poetry, prose and rhapsodies. The Six Dynasties literati moved away from the moralized narratives prevalent in the Han dynasty, where judgments were made from the standpoint of imperial unification. Instead, they transformed the story through mythologization, elevating Jing Ke’s qualities, enriching the tale with supernatural elements, and for the first time, incorporating imperial participation in its retelling. Some writers reconfigured the theme to highlight the intimate bond of recognition and loyalty between Jing Ke and Prince Dan of Yan. Moreover, sites of memory such as Yan territory and the Yi River transcended historical temporality to serve as loci of remembrance and emotional projection. Through intertextual techniques, literati infused these places with feelings of longing for a lost homeland and the sorrow of parting, thereby transposing the conflicts of the Warring States into the chaos of their own age and producing an emotional isomorphism between past and present. Analyzing Six Dynasties writings on Jing Ke reveals how his story was absorbed into the mental and emotional world of contemporary literati; while also illuminating how they reconstructed and reimagined history through their engagement with it.
