Scholarship on the transformation of modern Chinese historiography has emphasized the discovery of new sources, while paying less attention to their publication and circulation. Combining intellectual history with the history of printing, this article examines Luo Zhenyu罗振玉, a key figure in publishing newly unearthed materials, to show how his ideas, technical choices, and expatriate experience shaped his work. Rooted in a loyalist stance and Qing scholarly traditions, Luo’s publishing was not aimed at serving the New Historiography. He framed his work through a narrative of “preserving antiquity” in response to cultural loss, while advancing a distinction between the study of ancient writing and that of antiquities. His printing practices balanced scaled production with an emphasis on textual accuracy, reflecting both philological concerns and economic constraints. His residence in Japan further enabled a transnational publishing process drawing on both Japanese and Chinese technologies, setting his work apart from both late imperial literati publishing and modern commercial presses. The interplay of personal ideas, traditional concepts, new ways of life, and new technologies in Luo Zhenyu’s publishing reveals how tradition was organically sustained amid modern transformation.
