Previous scholarship has focused on classifying the jie 解style as either “debate”， “philosophical exposition”， or “textual exegesis”， neglecting its diachronic evolution and polymorphic manifestations. From the Pre-Qin to the Western Han dynasty， jie functioned both as a literary genre for resolving doubts and answering queries and as a hermeneutic form for explicating canonical texts. As a scriptural exegesis genre，its core methodology lay in segmentation—dividing textual units （chapters， passages， sentences， or words） of the classics， sequentially interpreting lexical items and phrases through exegetical analysis， synthesizing their essential meaning， and finally reintroducing the explicated scriptural segment via the formulaic phrase “gu yue” 故曰. During the Han dynasty， scriptural jie diverged into two trajectories： one evolved into the “exegetical jie style”， characterized by sequential word-by-word and phrase-by-phrase glossing； the other integrated the doubt-resolving function of jie， developing into the “jie style for resolving difficulties and clarifying purport”. Correspondingly， the “collected commentaries” 集解format of the Wei-Jin and Northern-Southern dynasties exhibited six distinct subtypes，whose complex and heterogeneous connotations often led to later conflation due to “different forms sharing the same name”. From the Northern-Southern dynasties to the Sui-Tang period， jie， ji jie， and “sub commentaries” 义疏deeply interpenetrated in their nomenclature， textual structure， exegetical methods， and functions. The evolution of the jie genre mirrors broader shifts in intellectual trends. A precise grasp of its origins and diachronic features is pivotal for authenticating texts and clarifying issues in the history of scholarship.
